Mud Pie designers, led by CEO and founder Marcia Miller, are inspired by cutting edge design. In 1982, Miller founded the first female-owned representative firm, or “rep firm,” in the Southeast, where she marketed and distributed some of the largest household brands, including Braun, Salton, and AllClad. Judd Miller and Co. exclusively managed product lines for the top retailers of the day, including Macy’s, Rich’s and Service Merchandise.
Mud Pie was born in 1988, when Miller started a small gift company that specialized in ceramics. The company name came from ceramics that were painted brown to resemble clay. In its first year, Mud Pie was Macy’s No. 1 domestically produced giftware line. Mud Pie recognized the potential in the market for custom-crafted gift products.
In 1993, the company opened a 1,800-square-foot showroom at the new Americas Mart Atlanta. At that time, Mud Pie was successfully producing several popular ceramic and concrete product lines, including cherubs, bird houses, bird feeders and various decorative animals.
In 2007, the company launched the Initials product category as a complement to its successful gift and baby categories. Mud Pie grew 80 percent that year.
Bag Lady, Mud Pie’s fashion and fashion accessory brand was launched in 2010 and continues to expand.
In April 2010, Judd Miller and Co., owner of the Mud Pie brand, announced that it had entered into a partnership with Lineage Capital, whereby Lineage acquired a non-controlling equity position in Mud Pie. Miller continues to lead the company and maintains a controlling interest in the business.
Mud Pie launched a consumer website in November 2010 to support its expanding brand and sell directly to consumers at www.mud-pie.com.
In March 2013, Mud Pie and The March of Dimes announced a partnership to raise a minimum of $100,000 for March of Dimes through the sale of Mud Pie’s signature baby socks.
By April 2013, in an exclusive arrangement with Mud Pie, Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, (near Traverse City, Michigan), opened the first retail store in the United States dedicated exclusively to the Mud Pie brand. The store, which opened in April, features a selection of Mud Pie apparel, accessories, gifts and baby merchandise bought by the resort to appeal to their business and leisure clientele.
In June of 2013 moved its offices to accommodate the company’s continued expansion. For her pioneering work in the industry, Miller has been featured in The New York Times, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, the Atlanta Business Chronicle and Earnshaw’s Magazine. Mud Pie, has been named to the 2013 Inc.500|5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in America. In 2011, Mud Pie was voted a “Top 300 Business of the South” and in the following year was voted a “2012 Bulldog 100: Fastest Growing Bulldog Businesses by the University of Georgia Alumni Association. Mud Pie received two Earnie Awards in 2012 for Best Children’s Gifts and Best Customer Service.
Miller has also been personally recognized with the Icon Award for Lifetime Achievement in the gift industry and The Gift for Life Trailblazer Award.
